What does TPO mean in trading? It means Time-Price-Opportunity.

This is the name given to the indicator by its creator, Peter Steidlmayer. He developed a special way of keeping statistics on trading activity on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. His know-how was that he used letters to record at what price level the most active trade was taking place.

When you add the TPO Volume indicator to your MT4 chart, you will see exactly the market profile.

But for the purposes of this review, let’s conventionally refer to it as the TPO Volume Indicator.

How do you read a TPO Volume
In fact, it is not very difficult to understand what the TPO Volume indicator shows.

Each price level corresponds to a bar on the indicator.

Arrow number 1 shows a very large bar on the indicator. It means that many trades were made at the corresponding price and their total volume was large. Such bars are called Point of Control. The indicator highlights them in dark blue color.

Arrow number 2 shows a small bar on the indicator. It means that not many trades were made at the corresponding price, and their total volume was small.

How do you trade a TPO
Making trading decisions based on the TPO Volume Indicator is a serious topic that requires effort to study.

Below we show examples of buy and sell signals, but they are too simple to express all the depth that the TPO Volume indicator gives for analysis and conclusions.

TPO Volume Buy Signal
The EURUSD forex chart below shows a buy setup.

Notice the Point of Control (POC) marked with a circle. It can be interpreted that at the level of 1.01580 there was a big battle between the buyers and sellers. And it was won by the buyers, because the price headed up from this level (as indicated by the arrow with the number 1).

When price drops to that level the next day, you have reason to view it as a support zone. It would be a good idea to go to a lower timeframe and use price action patterns to find an entry point into a long position in anticipation of a bounce.

The stop-loss can be set below the previous low, and the take-profit – at the level of the higher POC level. Watch for a favorable risk/reward ratio.

TPO Volume Sell Signal
The chart below shows a different logic.

The narrow profile, indicated by the circle, can be interpreted as a complete dominance of the sellers, as the price went down very quickly – for sure there were no buyers at that level.

Therefore, when the price rises to that level, you can count on it to work as a resistance. So there are opportunities to open a short position (these moments are marked with arrows).

The levels for placing stop-losses and take-profits are not obvious here, but that does not mean that risk management is allowed to be ignored.

Conclusion
